The modelling industry is competitive, but there are opportunities for many types of models. We've compiled a list of some tips to help you get started in the industry. With the advent of the internet, there are also many unscrupulous people out there who may try to take advantage of a new, inexperienced model. The best advice we can give is to be careful and use your common sense, and please read through the tips below.

TIPS ON GETTING STARTED

• Decide what kind of modelling best suits you. Be honest with yourself, and decide if you have "what it takes" to be a model.
  
  
• Read various message boards and websites about modelling. Education is the key to success.

• Put together a portfolio for yourself. Get some professional photos taken of yourself that are high quality and that you can be proud of. Put together a website for yourself. If you can't afford your own domain, use a free service, such as Myspace.

GENERAL SAFETY TIPS

• Never post personal contact information, such as address and phone number in an area where the public will view it (such as websites, message boards...etc).

• Be wary of unprofessional posts and emails. Also be wary of anyone contacting you using a free email service, such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

• Ask for references from other models who have worked with the person. Follow up with the models to verify the person is professional and on the level.

• Ask for examples of their work & clarify exactly what they want to use you for, and how the photos will be used.

• If you are traveling, always be sure to have a backup plan.

• If possible, take along a chaperone to the photo shoot.
